Why Facials Are Necessary As Skin Ages

How to achieve ageless skin with a facial after age 30.

As we enter the new year, I find myself reflecting on changes in my life, body, and of course my skin. I am soon to be 50 years old (!!) and I have to say, thanks to regular facials, sunscreen, and quality skincare & makeup, I feel like I can face this next chapter with grace. As an anti-aging expert, I often talk about a youthful glow and ageless skin. But what does that really mean? What is the science behind young skin and a youthful complexion?

The basics of young skin.

Skin cells replace themselves every 28 days up, otherwise known as a cycle, until around age 25. Skin is ideally supple and smooth but life -meaning aging, changing hormones, stress, illness and the environment- rage against the young. Fortunately, skin cells replace themselves so quickly that in your teens and twenties, the tell tale signs of damage are hard to see.

As time goes on and aging takes its course, our bodies slow, our brains slow, and yes, those precious young skin cells slow, too. This leads to facial lines, creases, and wrinkles, discoloration, and loss of elasticity as well as collagen (the protein that gives skin firmness). Let’s face it, nature always wins and we will never get our young skin back but, we can achieve a youthful, ageless, and above all...healthy glow.

So now that you are over 30 years, how do you achieve youthful skin?

It goes without saying that lifestyle choices have much to do with how our skin ages. Don’t smoke, wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and find a way to relieve stress. But let us not forget the importance of a proper skincare regimen. With so many quality skincare products on the market -think peptides, collagen boosters, serums, oil cleansers, and plumpers- heads can spin with confusion! So what really helps us ladies over 30 achieve a youthful complexion?

In my opinion, and my skin agrees, regular skincare treatments or facials are key to maintaining an even skin tone and a smooth, glowing complexion. Establishing a relationship with a medical aesthetician (hi, friends 🙂 ) will be your best anti-aging ally over the years. The use of professional chemical solutions as well as mechanical skincare treatments like microdermabrasion, ultrasonic facial toning, and microneedling, will make it so you...

1. Need less product at home.
2. Make it so that said skincare product is more effective.
And...
3. Manually force skin cell renewal (remember the 28 day cycle? You are tricking your body in to doing that!).

Your aesthetician, or facialist, can provide regular, custom skincare to help ease you out of troubled skin. This is why a professional skincare analysis is so crucial to maintaining youthful, healthy skin!

Adult breakouts?
Scarring pigmentation?
Sun spots?

We can help with that! Your skin changes, just like every element of your body, and an aesthetician will make sure you are using the right skincare with the right ingredients, as well as advise how to treat the underlying causes of particular complexion woes.

How to find a good aesthetician.

There are 3 words to watch out for when speaking with a skincare professional.

Correct.
Protect.
Restore.

Every aesthetician should strive to correct underlying skin issues by discussing history, current regimens, and using mechanical and chemical solutions to help skin cells protect themselves from environmental aggressors, restore vitality and glow, and create a healthy, youthful complexion.

Luckily, you can find amazing aestheticians easily these days. I like Charlotte’s Book and of course there is always YELP. If you are in the Bay Area and you like what I have said in my beauty blog :), please contact me at my practice, The Kasnoff Skin Clinic, because I am your woman!
