So you want a facial and you’ve done your research. Great! At The Kasnoff Skin Clinic, we may do things a bit differently than what you’ve experienced elsewhere. Here is what to expect beyond basic cleansing during your custom facial treatment…

Mechanical skincare treatments.

In order to correct, protect, restore, and most importantly, beautify the skin, I regularly perform diamond peel microdermabrasion treatments. This mechanical skincare treatment gently sands and buffs down dead skin buildup because its true…after age 25, our cells just get lazy and don’t replace themselves at half the rate they did before.  Read more about the difference between young skin and a youthful complexion here. At home exfoliants and masks are helpful and delicious to use, but they can not compare to the skilled hand of an esthetician wielding a microdermabrasion want.

Less manual extractions and more ultrasonic skincare treatment.

We all have pores that get filled up with dirt, debris, and dead skin.  Back in our early teens, we were taught to wrap our fingers in cotton and squeeze out every last blackhead, milia, and (omg, please don’t) pustules.  Remember, back then our skin could repair itself of mild damage within weeks, so no big deal. But once we enter our more experienced years, applying the same technique creates red damaged skin that is sure to scar.

In my practice, I apply ultrasonic deep pore cleansing to extract blackheads, whiteheads, and milia. This mechanical skincare treatment liquifies plugs that cause pores to swell and skin to look discolored and bumpy, by using a high frequency pulsing sensation. This works the same way a dentist’s ultrasound pick does.  The tool has a spatula that has a frequency of about 1800 vibrations per second and when it hits the liquid that is applied to the skin during the treatment, it acts like a power washer clearing away the debris. The results are amazing as I can do this under the eyes, neck, and chest as well as the face. Many talented facialists use the steam and squeeze method with good results, I just choose to do it a different way.

Note: I do have needles for those that need it but I prefer to use as minimal invasive technique as possible!

Increased blood flow for better skin tone.

Now that the skin is smoothed and cleaned, it is time to get the blood flowing and increase oxygen in the capillaries. This will reduce inflammation and give the skin a big dose of antioxidants and botanicals to improve overall skin health.  I use an oxygenating treatment mask that acts as a vasodilator: an agent that brings blood to the surface of the skin. This creates hundreds of popping bubbles (think pop rocks) activating blood flow while depositing antioxidants, ginseng and other botanicals into the skin. This agent flushes away congestion in the tiny blood vessels that cause redness on the nose, and cheeks to give a healthy glow. This also helps with dark circles under the eyes which is often caused by lack of oxygenation in the blood due to improper blood flow and lack of sleep (similar to what happens when you wrap a string around your finger, swollen and purple skin). When the oxygenating treatment is finished, you will notice less puffiness, discoloration, and inflammation than before.

Chemical solutions to jump start the new skin.

Depending on the underlying condition of the skin, it may be time for a chemical peel. At the end of your all inclusive facial, I apply a super mild chemical solution to jump start the healing process of the skin and fortify the underlying structure. In my experience I have seen many clients have an allergic reaction to the stronger enzyme peels like pumpkin, so I prefer using a light chemical peel as I feel I can control the results better by reducing the percentage of the solution. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pumpkin enzyme peel, but for the most effective skin conditioning treatment, mild chemical peels are my choice. Read all about the differences between chemical peels here.

I hope that answers all of your questions on what a facial is like with me at the wheel! And for those that have been seeing me for years, perhaps you can drop some skincare treatment knowledge on your friends the next time your beautiful skin is the topic of conversation. 🙂

Until your next facial,

Xo~
