Micro-needling or Collagen Induction Therapy FAQ
Micro-needling or "Collagen Induction Therapy"
What is Micro-needling?
Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), otherwise known as Micro-needling, is a procedure that improves the appearance of wrinkles, acne, scars, hyperpigmentation (or sun damage), and stretch marks. Micro-needling is one of the newer skin surface treatments in the field of cosmetic medicine. Micro-needling improves your skin surface imperfections through a process called PCIT, or Per-Cutaneous Collagen Synthesis Therapy, by inducing a series of very tiny, controlled “micro-wounds”. It stimulates your skin’s natural ability to repair itself by using tiny, sharp needles to create hundreds of micro-channels in the superficial layers of the skin. For more advanced treatments, the needles penetrate the dermal layer helping to improve deep scarring and acne. In response to these micro-injuries, your body releases growth factors and cytokines which trigger the wound-healing process; the basic mechanism underlying the photorejuvenation found in laser and IPL treatments. During this process, the body produces more collagen, a fibrous protein that contributes to the structural integrity of the skin, resulting in thicker, more youthful-appearing skin and healthier complexion.
How The RejuvaPen Works During Micro-needling.
The RejuvaPen is a micro-needling system that uses a specialized “pen” containing a cartridge with nine small needles. While using this sterilized pen in the Anti-Aging Micro-needling Facial Treatment, vibrations of 6000-8000 rpm gently puncture the most superficial layers of skin cells. For more advanced treatments (such as the Acne Scarring Facial Treatment) the dermal layer (i.e. the area beneath the epidermis) is penetrated to create a controlled reaction to stimulate your skin’s natural repair process. By kick-starting this repair process, your skin naturally increases collagen and elastin production for a visible improvement in fine lines, sun damage, texture, scars, stretch marks, and brown sun spots on the face. Micro-needling not only boosts collagen production, but also opens micro-channels in your skin to effectively transport anti-aging ingredients found in topical creams, serums, and medications.
What Does A Micro-needling Treatment Include?
A Micro-needing Facial Treatment at The Skin Clinic in San Francisco includes:
Deep Pore Cleansing
Numbing Treatment - 15 minutes
Chemical Peel dependent on type of Micro-needling session
Rejuva Pen Micro-needling treatment - 20 minutes
Once the skin has been cleaned and is totally numb, the Rejuva Pen Treatment begins. First, a Chemical Peel and Ultrasound are given to prepare the skin then a Kasnoff Skincare Serum is applied over the entire face. The Rejuva Pen is then gently glided over the skin surface for 20 minutes to effectively stimulate the skin’s repair process. Once finished, a masque is applied followed by an appropriate Kasnoff Skincare Treatment is applied to soothe, treat, and heal the skin.
At the end of the facial, all clients will be sent home with a customized in-home skincare regimen and appropriate skincare serum and cream for proper healing.
Benefits of Microneedling
Micro Needling can be compared to fractional laser when it comes to treating the dermal layer when treating moderate to severe acne scars, stretch marks, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. One of the major benefits of microneedling is the fact that there is little to no extensive skin peeling to deal with (hooray!). Recovery times are short and painless. Also, unlike laser treatments, micro needling can be performed around the eyes, lip and nose area with great results. Also, Micro needling may be performed on clients who may be intolerant to the chemical or laser resurfacing process such as those with dark complexions, sensitive and reactive skin types.
I usually get chemical peels. Should I switch to micro-needling?
It depends on your skin type. If you are older, with increasing fine lines, and wrinkles around the mouth and eyes, then it may be time to add a Micro-needling session to your facial regimen, not replace chemical peels entirely. Micro-needling can go deeper – with minimal downtown – to help increase the results from injections, facial serums and creams, and your regular chemical peels. If you have younger skin, but suffered from acne and scarring, then you too can benefit from micro-needling. Your treatment sessions might be more frequent yet less deep than more mature skin, and your skin might break-out a bit more from increased active cellular regeneration (a catch-22 as younger skin means faster growth.) A consultation is always recommended before any treatment to discuss concerns and skin history. Learn more about chemical peel and micro-needling differences here.
Is this a non-invasive skin treatment?
Micro-needling of the outer layers, or stratum corneum, is non-invasive. Microneedling to the dermal layers is invasive as it penetrates deep into the skin.
When will I see results?
Clients will see results right away due to the deep penetration of anti-aging product ingredients, antioxidants, humectants, etc (otherwise known as EGF or Epidermal Growth Factors). They will continue to see improvement over the next 4-6 weeks if they did a light treatment and up to 6 months to a year if the work is deeper.
Does this treatment hurt?
Since the skin is numbed prior to the actual micro-needling session, the treatment is virtually painless. Minor discomfort may occur afterwards, similar to a chemical peel, depending on the level of treatment.
What is the expected down time?
There is very little downtime for any Micro-needling treatment. Clients may experience a slight pinkness for a few hours or sometimes, puncture scabs if the treatment is for deeper scarring
What types of Micro-Needling Facials are offered?
I offer 3 types of micro-needling treatments depending on your current skin concern. The acne scarring treatment is more invasive and combats deep scar tissue to smooth skin; the anti-aging treatment is non-invasive and restores skin to a youthful, more even toned, and healthy complexion; and the pigmentation treatment fights discoloration of the skin from environmental damage and is non-invasive. All are offered at $300 and include specific Kasnoff Skincare Serums and Creams for proper healing.
